The group of Industrial and Environmental fluid mechanics (IE-Fluids) of the University of Trieste, Italy, led by Prof. Vincenzo Armenio, has developed the first Large Eddy Simulation model in the scientific community for the analysis of real-scale environmental flows. The model uses a two-eddy viscosity SGS model and immersed boundaries for the geometrical complexities. The software is written in fortran 90 and uses MPI for parallelization.
The PhD project is concerned with three main topics:
- Development of a novel SGS model for temperature and concentration fluxes, to be used in stratified conditions;
- Development of a module for the study of erosion processes;
- Application of the model to the study of a water basin under stratified conditions and in presence of erosion.
The ideal candidate is no older than 26, has a masters degree (laurea specialistica) in Mathematics or Physics or Engineering. He/She is strongly motivated and familiar to (or willing to work on) numerical simulations. During the PhD training the student will develop skills in turbulence theory and analysis, in numerical methods for turbulent flows, in HPC with special emphasis on MPI and parallel programming.
